Shocking news has struck the Philadelphia Union. Union all-time leading goal scorer Daniel Gazdag is being traded to the Columbus Crew for cash. After a great start to the 2025 season, the front office had to remind fans that they do not care about them.
Death, taxes, and the Union front office harming their relationship with the fanbase. Looking at the move in many different ways makes it hard to find a reason that makes total sense. Unfortunately, the front office does not care. We can go into many reasons why this move is awful.
Traded to a Rival
It is one thing to trade a top player across the country to a different conference. However, it is completely different to send him to a rival team that is right in front of you in the standings. The Union not only weakened their team but gave an already stacked club even more firepower. A team whose number one goal is to win trophies does not do that.
As of right now, the Union sits 2 points behind the crew, who are first in the East. Not only did the Union give Gazdag away, but they also lost new CB singing Ian Glavinovich to a torn meniscus.
Is There a Clear Replacement?
Perhaps one of the more shocking aspects of the move is that there is no clear replacement. Cavan Sullivan comes to mind. However, he has played just 17 minutes in MLS so far in 2025. There is no way he gets thrown into the starting number 10 role. New signing Indiana Vassilev will likely fill Gazdag’s role. Quinn Sullivan will likely supplement it as well.
However, whether there was a replacement ready or not, Daniel Gazdag is a club legend who does not get traded on a random Wednesday in April. Love him or hate him, he is the clubs all time leading scorer and was an integral part to the 2022 Union team that come within 90 seconds of winning the MLS Cup.
The way this club has treated legends in recent years is causing loud alarms throughout the fanbase.
The Union Have a Clear Plan and Will Not Deviate
If this trade has proven anything, it is this club is rock solid in their philosophy. The Union’s philosophy is to develop young talent. Sell the talent. Buy and develop players from unknown locations. Then sell those players before the Union have to pay them.
One of the few positive aspects is that Gazdag was on a contract year and was going to be due a nice payday. So it is good the Union will at least get something in return for his departure. However, this is the same path the Union has been on for years.
The only true crutch in this philosophy is the front office only cares about one thing. That is putting money in ownership’s pocket. Championships are nice, money is better, I guess.
Gazdag also clearly did not completely mesh well with the Union’s new system. It is likely the Union were quietly shopping him for a while and finally got a serious offer. The timing is off considering the Union’s early season success. However, as has been proven, the Union get to make some money with no plan to reinvest it.
How Long Do the Fans Stay?
With the turmoil between the Union front office and the fans over the last year, it begs a great question. How long do the fans stay? Philadelphia is a passionate sports city. However, they also don’t accept mediocrity. The Union may be winning now, but if that takes a turn for the worst the stadium will continue to empty.
The Union is a business with the number one goal of making a profit. However, there has to be more at stake than profit when owning a sports franchise. If there is no hope for competition or winning trophies, then what is there is cheer for? By the looks of things, it seems the Union front office is challenging Union fans to find something to root for.
