The week, Philadelphia made Sports History yet again.
Local soccer phenom Cavan Sullivan is not just the youngest player to ever sign a four-year deal with the Philadelphia Union until 2028 as a first-team player. If Sullivan plays in a match before the end of July 2024, he will “be will become the youngest player to make his debut among the top North American professional sports leagues (MLB, MLS, NBA, NFL, NHL, NWSL) as well as the youngest player to make his debut among the top five European soccer leagues.” This according to the Philadelphia Union Website.
All indications are that he’ll obtain that record.
As a youth player, Sullivan joined the youth academy of American for the Philadelphia Union in 2020. His talent would help the club win the 2023 Generation Adidas Cup.
In March 2024 — Cavan Sullivan made his debuted in professional soccer — the 56th minute in an MLS Next Pro match for Philadelphia Union II. Sullivan provided an assist in the 86th minute in a 2–1 victory for Philadelphia.
Fifty years ago this year, the Phillies made history by signing fourteen year old shortstop Jorge Lebanon as the youngest player to ever sign an MLB contract for $30,000.00.
Details of Cavan Sullivan’s contract were not disclosed. Only that Philadelphia had made sports history — once again.
