It is a dark time in the Philadelphia Union’s history. They missed the playoffs, Jim Curtin has been fired, and the only clear direction is down. However, there has to be something that Union fans have to look forward to, right?
The vibes around the Philadelphia Union have been in the gutter—and rightfully so. However, let’s take a positive look at things. There are still things Union fans can look forward to.
Cavan Sullivan
The most exciting thing in the Union’s future is the development of 15-year-old star Cavan Sullivan. Sullivan made worldwide headlines during the summer as he inked a historic deal that would send him to European giants Manchester City when he turns 18. Until then, Union fans get to see what he can do.
Sullivan, at 14, became the youngest player in North American sports history to make his professional debut. While he didn’t feature for the Union’s top MLS team in 2024, he did lead Union II to the MLS Pro Next championship. Under a new regime next year, perhaps Sullivan will be a focal point of the Union’s 2025 plans.
A New Regime
Multiple things can be true at once. Jim Curtin did not deserve to be fired and the Union may benefit from an identity makeover. Of course, if the Union goes the cheap route and hires from within, then we will likely see another head coach with the same principles as Curtin. However, if the Union does bring in a head coach who preaches a different playstyle, then who knows what kind of Union team they will have.
Whether the Union is going to be good or bad next year is unknown. However, there is nothing worse than being predictable. At this moment, there has to be some excitement that we really don’t know what the Union will be.
Always a Silver Lining
It is a rough point in Union history. The fall from the heights they reached was always going to hurt. However, no matter how dark things get, the fan’s support for the Union crest won’t change.
Fans don’t have to support a greedy tone-deaf owner. There will always be a silver lining and the hope that the Union will return to the top of the league again one day soon.
