We have an answer for you, Abbott and Costello: It’s Kyle.
When he first entered the bigs with Chicago (the Cubbies, not the Southsiders) Kyle Schwarber was a catcher and left fielder. Then he doffed the tools of ignorance, as the arms and armor of the catching profession are sometimes known, and stayed in left, with the occasional DH day. He signed with the Nationals in 2021, who saw fit to keep him in left, as did Boston, (who acquired him at the deadline) for the most part, though the Bosox did try him at 1st for 10 games. After that he joined our Phillies, who planted him in left, until he became a near full-time DH last season.
And that brings us to the present day, which comes with the news that Schwarber may be an option at 1st, where he played yesterday. Those who still keep a scorecard in this day and age won’t be penciling him in to the 3 spot with regularity, but the ability to put him at 1st occasionally would be a useful option to have, giving Bryce Harper a DH day every now and then (and yes, providing some protection in the case of an injury, perish the thought). If there’s such a thing as too much positional versatility, it hasn’t yet been discovered.
All that being said, today’s question of the day is:
What do you think of Schwarber as an option at 1st base?
