The Major League Baseball playoffs have begun and the Philadelphia Phillies will play their first game on Saturday at 4:08 p.m. EST.
The Phillies came up short of a World Series championship in the previous two years. The team is hungry and determined to bring the trophy back to the City of Brotherly Love. Everyone on the roster, including the coaching staff, needs to be at their best to accomplish their goal. Who are the three most important players for the Phillies in their quest for a championship?
The Three Most Important Players for the Phillies in MLB Playoffs are Bryce Harper, Jeff Hoffman and Bryson Stott
Bryce Harper
Harper is the face of the Phillies and one of the best players the game has ever seen. He’s been in the spotlight from the time he was 16 years old and has never failed to live up to his expectations.
The 31-year-old is made for the big moment. Harper is an eclectic player who’s must-see TV. The left-handed slugger has delivered in the clutch moments time after time throughout his 13-year career with none bigger than the two-run home run he hit in Game 5 of the 2022 NLCS to give the Phillies a 4-3 lead over the San Diego Padres sending them to the World Series for the first time since 2009.
Harper is a superstar and a future Hall of Fame player. He’s the leader of the Phillies and needs to play like it to give his team a chance at glory.
Jeff Hoffman
With the exception of a few players, the Phillies pitching staff has been one of the best in the majors all season long. Jeff Hoffman has been a bright spot in the Phillies bullpen in 2024. The right-hander was named to the first All-Star Game of his career and is a nominee for All-MLB honors.
Hoffman finished the season with a career-best 2.17 ERA. The 31-year-old had 21 holds and 10 saves in the back end of the Phillies bullpen. He had 89 strikeouts in 66 ⅓ innings of work and opponents were hitting just .197 against him.
Hoffman did struggle some down the stretch posting a 5.56 ERA in August after dominating all season before that. He bounced back with eight scoreless innings allowing just four base runners while striking out 11 batters to start September. He allowed four earned runs in his final appearance of the 2024 regular season which brought his ERA from 1.65 to 2.17.
Hoffman appeared in 8 games for the Phillies last postseason. He recorded nine strikeouts, walked just one batter and allowed only two runs off a two-run home run in the Game 2 loss of the NLDS against the Atlanta Braves. He’s a dominant and reliable arm for Rob Thomson in high-leverage situations and needs to continue his success in this year’s playoffs.
Bryson Stott
Bryson Stott had a down year this season. He enjoyed a breakout season a year ago, and the organization believed they had their second baseman of the future.
Everyone has been wondering where the 2023 version of Stott has been all year. He slashed .245/.315/.356 with 11 home runs and 57 RBI this year. He hit 13 fewer doubles than last year and didn’t seem as confident at the plate, especially with two strikes on him. Stott even saw his playing time diminish with other options playing well off the bench.
Stott needs to figure things out at the plate, especially against left-handed pitching. The Phillies need him to produce in the middle/bottom half of the lineup. The Phillies can’t only rely on their superstars in the top half of the lineup to win playoff games. Everyone needs to pitch in, including Stott, and he knows it. The lineup would be that much more dangerous if Stott could return to his level of play from a year ago.
The Phillies Need Everyone to Elevate Their Game in MLB Playoffs
The Phillies success in the playoffs doesn’t just sit on those three players’ shoulders. They need production from everyone on the playoff roster if they want to win a World Series. Each person plays an important role. There’s no time for easing into the game in the playoffs. Every play, every pitch has to be played at a high level.
It’s win or go home, and anything short of a World Series in 2024 will be a disappointment for the Phillies.
