The Phillies follow up the exciting home opener with…nothing
After the Phillies rallied in the late innings on Monday afternoon to earn a win in the home opener, today, the Phillies will follow that up on Tuesday by…not playing.
Like many non-dome teams across baseball, the Phillies typically have an off day the day after the home opener. This is done so that if there’s inclement weather on the day of the opener, they can just push the game back and not cheat the fans who specifically purchased tickets for Opening Day.
I understand the reasoning, but it also seems like the open date might make the team more aggressive in postponing. For instance, they pre-emptively delayed the opener by a day in 2024, and the weather on the original date ended up being fine. This served to screw over those fans who were able to take off one afternoon, but not the next.
It’s also annoying as heck. Fans are excited about the new season, and that excitement keeps getting diminished by the breaks in the schedule.
At least the Phillies won on Monday. As annoying as the off day is, it’s even tougher when you have to deal with a loss in the opener. At one point, it looked like the Phillies were headed towards an ugly loss, and the two-day wait would have been unbearable.
I will need to throw away my phone if the Phillies lose the home opener to the Rockies 1-0

My question is: Should there be an off day scheduled for the day after the home opener? Or should the team risk that fans who buy tickets for Opening Day will miss out if the weather is bad?
