Prospecting season is upon us
We’re going to start our prospect coverage soon, but one thing I wanted to point out about prospect coverage.
I can’t stand the numbered ranking system of prospects.
In my opinion, when it comes to young players, the more effective way of telling people what they think of prospects is to rank them in tiers. Give me a top tier, the ones who are surefire All-Stars, when I see a list of names, followed by something like “maybe makes an All-Star game once or twice”, “solid regulars”, “platoon guys”, and “minor league depth players”. That feels a lot more accurate and fair in terms of what the player looks like he’ll end up being.
Will that mean unfair expectations placed on players? Of course. The “no doubt All-Star” player is going to be a big bust risk in his first season due to said label placed on him, but it would help differentiate the talent level within the organization more accurately.
