The Philadelphia Phillies have added a corner outfielder and some potential power by signing free agent Max Kepler, according to reports. MLB. com reporter Todd Zolecki and MLB insider Mark Feinsand were first on the news. Kepler, a left-handed hitting outfielder, has spent his entire career (10 years) with the Minnesota Twins. Looking to play for a different franchise for the first time, Kepler brings solid defense and the potential for power to the lineup. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the deal, pending a physical, is for one year and $10 million.
Sources telling @feinsand and me that the #Phillies and OF Max Kepler are working on a one-year deal, pending a physical. Kepler, 31, has spent entire 10-year career with the Twins.

Phillies Sign Max Kepler to One-Year Deal
Experience, Power, and Versatility
With 1,072 games over 10 seasons of MLB experience, Kepler brings the experience of a seasoned veteran who can relay his understanding of the game to younger players. Kepler’s career slash line of .237/.318/.429, and OPS+ of 102, which is just above the league average, making him a consistent contributor at the plate. Bringing a career WAR of 20.7 shows he has been a valuable asset throughout his career.
Kepler’s best season at the plate came in 2019 when he hit 36 home runs. During the 2019 campaign, he scored 98 runs and accumulated 32 doubles. His .519 slugging percentage that year, this peak performance shows the power Kepler can bring to the lineup. Also, his 162-game average for home runs is 24, which means he has the ability for power to strengthen the lineup. Being a left-handed batter, Kepler’s approach as a hitter helps provide offensive balance to the lineup.
Known as a right fielder, Kepler has played all three outfield positions during his career. Kepler’s reliable arm and solid glove make him valuable as a corner outfielder and fill-in center fielder. This versatility gives the Phillies flexibility in setting lineups and covering injuries.
Having been plagued with injuries the last couple of seasons, signing Kepler does come with a bit of a risk. Even though he’s had to deal with injuries, Kepler has played in at least 100 games in seven out of his 10 seasons as an MLB player. Given his experience, power, and versatility, Kepler’s signing adds a well-rounded talent to the Phillies lineup.
