The 2023 list of Phillies Silver Slugger finalists features four of their best players. This quartet consists of catcher J.T. Realmuto, shortstop Trea Turner, outfielder Kyle Schwarber, and designated hitter Bryce Harper. The Phillies are also a collective finalist for the team Silver Slugger Award. In addition, the Phillies had a .765 OPS this season, which ranked third in the NL. The Phillies also had a 108 OPS+ as a team in 2023 Of the Phillies players that played in at least 100 regular season games, Edmundo Sosa was the lone player to have an OPS+ below the league average of 100. Phillies 2023 Silver Slugger Finalists
J.T. Realmuto
In 135 games this season, Realmuto had a .252/.310/.452 line with 20 home runs and 63 RBI. Furthermore, he recorded a .324 wOBA along with a 106 OPS+ and a 102 wRC+. If Realmuto were to win the award, it would be his fourth career Silver Slugger and second with the Phillies. This season, Realmuto had an interesting split between home and road games. At home, Realmuto had a .198/.257/.320 line with six home runs and 33 RBI. Meanwhile, on the road, Realmuto had a .306/.364/.587 line with 14 home runs and 30 RBI. Of qualified NL catchers, Realmuto had the third-best OPS and the second-best slugging percentage while ranking fifth in batting average and OBP. Realmuto is the best catcher in baseball and is very deserving of a Silver Slugger Award this season.
Trea Turner
In 155 games this season, Turner had a .266/.320/.459 line with 26 home runs and 76 RBI. He also had a .333 wOBA along with a 111 OPS+ and a 108 wRC+. This would be the second time Turner has won a Silver Slugger if he were to win the award, and first with the Phillies. This season, Turner did much better while ahead in the count (.288/.456/.479 line) compared to being behind in the count (.199/.209/.331 line). Of qualified NL shortstops, Turner had the third-best OPS and the second-best slugging while ranking second in batting average and fifth in OBP this season. Turner’s success was fueled by an amazing August following a standing ovation in Philadelphia. While the first half of the season might not have been the finest performance for Turner, he turned it around in the second half and has earned consideration for a Silver Slugger Award.
Kyle Schwarber
In 160 games this season, Schwarber had a .197/.343/.474 line with 47 home runs and 104 RBI. He also compiled a .350 wOBA along with a 122 OPS+ and a 119 wRC+. If Schwarber wins the award then this would be his second Silver Slugger, both coming with the Phillies. Like Turner, Schwarber struggled while behind in the count, (.099/.106/.231 line) while performing better ahead in the count (.253/.565/.545). Of qualified NL outfielders, Schwarber tied for the ninth-best OPS and had the ninth-best slugging this season while ranking lower in batting average and OBP. The stat line Schwarber put up this season is one of the most unusual in baseball history. Even with the low batting average, the power output for Schwarber makes him deserving of a Silver Slugger Award.
Bryce Harper
In 126 games this season, Harper had a line of .293/.401/.499 with 21 home runs and 72 RBI. He also had a .384 wOBA along with a 146 OPS+ and a 142 wRC+ for the year. This would be the third Silver Slugger Award for Harper and his second with the Phillies. In 2023, Harper played much better at home (352/.459/.622) than on the road (.233/.340/.374). Of qualified NL designated hitters, Harper had the second-best OPS and had the third-best slugging, while having the best batting average and OBP this season. Even after missing the first part of the season, Harper was able to put together a very impressive campaign at the plate, all things considered. The Phillies offense would not have been as successful this season without Harper. With all of that in mind, Harper is deserving of a Silver Slugger Award for 2023.
