Come On. You Remember, Don’t You?
In barbershops and bars across the City, the talk in Philadelphia is all about those Fightin’ Phillies. And why shouldn’t it be, with an impressive 37–15 — the best record in the NL East and Alec Brohm being 3rd best in the majors in runs batted in, the red hot Ranger Suarez with a league-high nine wins, and an ERA 1.36 and 14 saves, and ace Zach Wheeler with seventy-six strikeouts?
The Phillies — the oldest continuous sports franchise in the US — this week extended their 2024 win streak to match that of the 1892 Phillies team. Both teams have seen a win streak of 29–6.
You remember that team, don’t you?
Don’t worry, no need to rack your brain. Unless you possess the constitution of an ox and have avoided ultra-processed food basically all of your life, you probably don’t remember a Phillies season from 132 years ago. In fact, no one on the planet currently does.
Unfortunately for the Phillies in their ninth season of existence — 1892 was a split season. While the first half of the season saw the Phillies posted an impressive 46–30 record that was third place in the National League behind the Boston Beaneaters and Brooklyn Grooms, unfortunately the second half of the season had a 41–36 record finishing in fifth place 12.5 games behind.
Behind outfielders Sam Thompson and Ed Delahanty with 104 and 91 RBI’s respectively, first baseman Roger Connors 12 homeruns, and 32 wins and an ERA 2.66 from pitcher, the 1892 team much like the 2024 team posted a 29–6 record over 35 games.
This season, the iconic pinstripes will dawn new alternate uniforms at every Friday home game at Citizens Bank Park with the colors of Philadelphia’s first City Flag dating back to 1895.
The difference between 1892 and 2024 besides 132 years — the previous Phillies team didn’t make the playoffs.
This team is destined to do much more than that.
