After an ugly 3-5 road trip that first took the Phillies overseas to London then back to Boston and then to Baltimore, the team finds themselves in the worst stretch of the season thus far.
The team left Philadelphia on June 5th to go to London to play the Mets, they return tomorrow, June 17th. 12 days. The schedule makers certainly did not do the Phillies any favors with this 8 game stretch and it showed the last two days in Baltimore.
Injuries are starting to pile up, the offense has gone cold and the leagues best pitching staff has gotten shelled the last time through.
There is no need to panic though. The Phillies are coming home to open a 3 game set against the Padres and then the Diamondbacks, two NL West teams hovering around the .500 mark this year. Facing off at home against two average teams traveling across the country is just what the doctor ordered for a struggling Phillies club.
The team will also reportedly welcome Trea Turner back for Monday’s game which is a much needed addition to the top of the lineup. Turner was having a phenomenal season before injuring his hamstring on May 3 against the Giants. He was well on his way to making his first all-star game with the Phillies and batting over .340 at the time of the injury. Turner should slide right back into the 2 spot and let Nick Castellanos return to the 5 or 6 spot where he is much better suited.
As things start to return to form and the Phillies finally get a breather it’s extremely likely that they find themselves playing their brand of baseball in the very near future.
