The team that killed the Flyers playoff hopes has no killed on of the most popular website for hockey fans. It was announced this week by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet that the Washington Capitals organization will be purchasing CapFriendly.com. CapFriendly was launched in 2015 as an excellent source for fans interested in team data. Such as salary cap space, contract lengths, trades, signings, and call-ups. Diehard hockey fans would be glued to CapFriendly during the trade deadline and free agency as it is one of the best sites for up to the minute stories about player transitions.
With the Capitals purchase of the site they intend on shutting it down on July 5th, a few days after free agency opens. It is unclear as to why the Capitals purchased the website. It is speculated that the owners of the site wanted to sell it and the Capitals were the highest bidder. Or the organization wanted to shut down the site in order to limit the amount of information available to the public about player contracts.
Coming out of the news about the shutdown PuckPedia.com has taken the reins as the go to site for NHL contract news.
Many hockey fans will be spending the last month reminiscing about all the time they have spent on CapFriendly. Eagerly refreshing the page at 3pm on deadline day and being glued to the screen on July 1st. Creating mock trades with insanely lopsided transitions that would never happen in real life. As well as creating mock expansion drafts for the Vegas Golden Knights and Seattle Kraken.
No matter what the reasoning is CapFriendly will be dead next month and it is important that hockey fans are able to find a replacement site with all the information they need. And the site is PuckPedia.com
