The Philadelphia Flyers (17-20-5) are set to host the Anaheim Ducks (17-19-5) at the Wells Fargo Center on January 11, 2025. This is the second of two meetings between the teams this season. The Flyers will be looking for the season sweep after defeating the Ducks 3-1 on December 28. The Ducks will be looking to bounce back from a beatdown at the hands of the St. Louis Blues on Thursday, while the Flyers will be looking to end a four-game skid. The marquee story for this matchup is Cutter Gauthier‘s first game in Philadelphia since the drama-filled trade almost a year ago to the date.
The Philadelphia Flyers Story
The Flyers are struggling, losing their last four games. Although, all four losses were to Stanley Cup contenders. They are 3-6-1 in their last 10 games. Samuel Ersson is the likely starter after having a stellar performance against Anaheim the last time these two teams met, saving 32 of 33 shots. The Flyers will be motivated and backed by a raucous crowd looking to give Cutter Gauthier a proper “Philly” welcome.
The Anaheim Ducks Story
The Ducks have shown improvement recently with a 5-4-1 record in their last ten games. One of those losses was an ugly one against the St. Louis Blues due to an unexpectedly poor performance from Lukas Dostal. The Ducks were only five points from a wildcard playoff spot before that critical loss to a team they are chasing in the standings. Dostal will be the expected starter in Philadelphia and given a chance to bounce back. All eyes will be on Gauthier as he tries to get the last laugh against the team that drafted him.
Prediction
Both teams will be motivated: one to stop a four-game losing streak and the other to show that their last game was a fluke. The Flyers will try to make Cutter Gauthier’s life miserable. That distraction and those emotions will get the better of the Flyers – to Torts’ dismay.
Prediction: Ducks win 4-1
