Two Flyers prospect are playing in the Canadian Hockey League championship for the Memorial Cup. The Memorial Cup is contested between the three champions of the OHL, WHL, QMJHL, and a host city. This season those teams are the London Knights, Moose Jaw Warriors, Drummondville Voltigeurs, and Saginaw Spirit. Defensemen Oliver Brink and forward Denver Barkey who were drafted last season by the Flyers will be playing for the Memorial Cup as members of the London Knights in the championship game Sunday night. Bonk was selected 22nd overall while Barkey was picked 95th overall in the 2023 draft. Bonk played 60 games in the regular season for London recording 67 points, while Barkey played 64 games recording 102 points. Both players have played three games so far in the Memorial Cup tournament recording one goal and three assists each.
The IIHF World Championship wrapped up this past Sunday in Czechia where team Czechia took home the gold beating Switzerland in the championship. While team Sweden beat team Canada in the bronze metal game, and team USA lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual champions. The Flyers had two players representing their nations at the World Championships, forwards Joel Farabee for team USA and goaltender Sam Ersson for team Sweden. Through eight games Farabee scored one goal, (which was shorthanded) and one assist. While Sam Ersson split his starts with Minnesota Wild goaltender Filip Gustavsson. Ersson started four games winning three with a 1.44 GAA and 89.13 SV%.
The NHL the Stanley Cup Playoffs are into the conference finals where the Florida Panthers and New York Rangers are tied 2-2, and in the west the Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars are also tied 2-2. The AHL are also in their conference finals for the Calder Cup where the Coachella Valley Firebirds, affiliates to the Seattle Kraken, are up 1-0 over the Milwaukee Admirals, affiliates to the Nashville Predators. While in the east the Hershey Bears and Cleveland Monsters will start their series on Thursday night in Chocolate Town. The Bears are AAA affiliates to the Capitals while the Monsters and affiliates to the Blue Jackets. Last season’s Calder Cup Final was won by the Bears in seven games over the Firebirds. The ECHL Kelly Cup Finals are set to begin this weekend with the Kansas City Mavericks facing off against the two time defending champion Florida Everblades. The Mavericks are AA affiliates to the Seattle Kraken and the Everblades are in the farm system of the Florida Panthers. The Professional Women’s Hockey League crowned their first championship this week when Minnesota defeated Boston in five games of a best of five series.
