John Ross III Sees Opportunity in Philadelphia. The Eagles See Opportunity in Ross.
In the NFL — as in life — vacancy provides an opportunity. For Eagles receiver John Ross III, it is exactly what he has been looking for.
And what he is looking for is an opportunity.
The best receiving group in the NFL hasn’t found the right fit for the slot receiver position. In two years with the dominance of A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert, you’d think that plenty of opportunity would be available.
But the Quez Watkins, who dropped a key pass in the Super Bowl, hometown St. Joe’s Prep product Olamide Zaccheaus, and veteran Julio Jones all were not the answer.
This week Eagles receiver Devante Parker (who was signed in March 2024) retired.
After four successful years at the University of Washington, Ross was injured as a senior in the 2016 Peach Bowl against the Crimson Tide in the CFP. After surpassing Chris Johnson’s time with a 4.24 in the 40 in the NFL Combine — Ross was drafted 9th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Bengals.
After three seasons of not being given the chance to start alongside A.J. Green, Ross signed a contract with the New Giants in March 2021. In January 2023, he signed a reserves/futures contract with the Chiefs and subsequently informed them of his retirement.
Now one of the most talented receivers in the 2017 NFL Draft joins the most talented wide receiver group in the 2024 NFL.
What a place to make a comeback. What a perfect opportunity.
