Many Didn’t Know Jalyx Hunt in Philadelphia. That Is About to Change.
Nearly fourty years ago in 1985, newly installed Eagles Head Coach Buddy Ryan began his plan for the Eagles.
His design began with defense. The unit that he would build over the next six years was just not a top defense. They did everything that you could possible ask of a defensive unit — stopped you from scoring, stopped you from moving the ball, created turnovers, and even put up points of their own. Points in bunches.
More importantly — they pulverized your offense in the process.
Buddy Ryan knew NFL talent. Draft Day was his sweet spot.
The Eagles grabbed Clyde Simmons from Western Carolina University in 1986, Seth Joyner from the University of Texas El Paso also in 1986, and in 1989 took Jessie Small from Eastern Kentucky University.
Then he paired them with Andre Waters from Cheyney University — his high executioner in the secondary.
Since moving back into the front office after the departure of Chip Kelly in 2015, one of Howie Roseman’s sweet spots has been the NFL Draft as well. Philadelphia has routinely gotten high draft grades while replenishing key positions of need after free agents have moved on.
On Friday, that trend continued when the Eagles selected Jalyx Hunt in the third round with the 94th overall pick from Houston Christian. In 2022, he was the second-team All-Southland Conference there, in 2023 he was Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year and an All-American, SLC Defensive Player of the Year, and First-team All-SLC.
He would finish his career in college with 133 tackles, 20.5 tackles-for-loss and 13.5 sacks. At the combine, he ran a 4.64 in the 40 and had a 37.5 vertical jump.
In terms of toughness, he’d be one of Buddy’s favorites.
The Eagles fully expect, he’ll be one of yours too.
