Here’s A Look Into The Eagles First Unofficial Roster. Who is Shaping Up To Make The Team?
This week has been big in shaping rosters for the regular season. Many teams unveiled their first unofficial roster and depth chart, and the Eagles were no exception to that. Philly media certainly has things to say about this first depth chart. What are some of the top headlines coming out of it?
Camp Standouts Being Rewarded
Eagles Wire has provided the full list of players on the depth chart. One thing that’s clear from the jump is that players making strong impressions early in camp are being rewarded. Will Shipley for example, has the running back three spot currently behind Kenneth Gainwell and Saquon Barkley. On other teams, this probably doesn’t seem like a big deal. However, the Eagles like to employ a runningback-by-committee style, even with a prominent back like Barkley. This means Shipley would be in for some key touches this season if he can keep that spot.
Another name being rewarded early on the depth chart early is Jordan Davis. The defensive tackle is being praised in camp so far and has earned favor on the roster. He earned a starting spot on the early depth chart next to fellow Bulldog Jalen Carter. Both look to have bounce-back seasons in 2024 and solidify the future of the defensive line.
Other camp standouts like Devin White and Zack Baun earned starting spots on the first depth chart at linebacker as well.
Guys Falling Behind
MSN reports that despite discussions of a position battle at QB, Kenny Pickett remains the quarterback two on the depth chart. However, this is still something to keep an eye on. Eliot Shorr-Parks implied on X that quarterback three Tanner McKee was outperforming Pickett in camp. If this keeps up, it will be interesting to see if McKee ends up overtaking Pickett backup QB spot.
Another interesting battle to watch is the right guard position. Former Jets first-round-pick Mekhi Becton was acquired by the birds to give him a fresh start opportunity. However, Metro Philadelphia reports that Becton is currently losing the starting right guard position to Tyler Steen. Being that this was essentially an open spot with no established starter, it will be interesting to see who wins out.
Nakobe Dean is another name that has struggled in camp despite being listed as a starter. He is being outperformed by White and Baun and Fangio reportedly told press he felt Dean had “taken a step back” after the teams public practice, according to Metro Philadelphia.
The most notable name to lose position is James Bradberry. Bradberry was a Second-Team-All-Pro in 2022 for the birds but struggled in 2023. Now, he seems to be struggling to find a role with the current roster. With a crowded cornerback room after the team drafted Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, Bradberry moved to safety to carve out a role there. That hasn’t worked out, as the current depth chart shows he is a backup behind Reed Blankenship.
The Absence of Cooper DeJean
As previously reported, DeJean will miss much of training camp and the preseason as he recovers from a hamstring injury. Due to this, DeJean has been left off of the first unofficial roster. That won’t last long, as the team views him as a future franchise cornerstone. It will be interesting to see where DeJean slots into the roster and whose spot he takes. DeJean is somewhat of a “swiss army knife” in the secondary and can slot in pretty much anywhere. Does that mean guys like Isaiah Rodgers and Kelee Ringo are in trouble? Is this something that finally forces out Bradberry? Only time will tell as the regular season marches closer.
