Philadelphia will need strong showings from their rookie cornerbacks.
The Eagles host the Rams on Sunday to compete for a spot in the NFC Championship Game. Here are things I’m watching as it comes to the rookies!
Can Quinyon Mitchell stay hot?
Mitchell played a lights out game against the Packers last week. His dominance was instrumental in the Eagles winning and he will need to be on top of his game once again this Sunday. The Rams’ passing game is dangerous between Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua, and Cooper Kupp. No matter who Mitchell is covering, he will need his A-game to keep the Los Angeles receivers at bay.
Cooper DeJean Bounce Back?
DeJean had a rough go against Green Bay. He struggled as the Packers picked on him in the passing game and he struggled slowing down their run game. The Los Angeles offensive attack is similarly balanced. DeJean will need to limit LA’s ability to pass in the short areas of the field while lending support in slowing down Kyren Williams in the running game. A return to form by the rookie nickel defender is a key to Philly winning this one.
Getting some juice from Jalyx
The Eagles have gotten solid, dependable play from Jalyx Hunt as he’s taken on a bigger role in the pass rush rotation over the last six weeks. He has yet to make splash plays but he’s held his own against the run while generating occasional pressures as a pass rusher. Some big plays from Hunt would be huge. The Eagles are already getting some really great play from Nolan Smith but getting some more pressure from the other side would be an excellent way to stymie Matthew Stafford.
