Playing time analysis.
The official snap counts from the Philadelphia Eagles’ Week 13 road win over the Baltimore Ravens are in! Let’s take a look and run through some analysis.
OFFENSE
- Saquon Barkley logged his second-highest snap count percentage this season. Only his Week 2 game was higher.
- Dallas Goedert suffered a knee injury in the fourth quarter and was ruled questionable to return. His status bears monitoring this week.
- Jahan Dotson was clearly WR2 with both DeVonta Smith and Johnny Wilson out.
- Parris Campbell saw a good chunk of playing time after being re-signed to the roster from the practice squad. He was targeted on Jalen Hurts’ first throw of the game, which got deflected at the line of scrimmage. Nick Sirianni credited both Campbell and Dotson with good downfield blocking on Barkley’s touchdown run.
- Grant Calcaterra saw some action replacing Ben VanSumeren as the Eagles’ fullback. Calcaterra only has two targets for zero catches since Goedert returned to the starting lineup.
- C.J. Uzomah’s snap count percentage increased for the third straight week. Uzomah is out of temporary practice squad elevations, so, it’ll be interesting to see how the Eagles handle TE3 moving forward.
- Tyler Steen saw playing time as a sixth offensive lineman in certain packages.
- Britain Covey’s sole target came on the Eagles’ first drive. Covey suffered a neck injury in this game and was ruled questionable to return.
- Kenny Gainwell didn’t log a touch in a game for the first time all season.
- Cooper DeJean replaced Reed Blankenship as the guy lined up deep behind the offense in victory formation. The offensive safety, if you will.
- Will Shipley saw a designed touch on the Eagles’ third play from scrimmage. Then he didn’t play on offense the rest of the game. The Eagles also did this with Shipley back in Week 4. What’s going on with this?
DEFENSE
- Zack Baun filled up the box score once again with a team-high 13 total tackles.
- Jalen Carter played a season-high 71 snaps, five more than his previous high. He showed no signs of being gassed; he was dominant. And he was even hustling to make downfield tackles on the Ravens’ final drive in garbage time. Vic Fangio clearly loves having him on the field as much as possible.
- Quinyon Mitchell briefly missed some action after Baun’s helmet hit the rookie’s knee. Kelee Ringo filled in for two snaps.
- Nolan Smith led all Eagles edge rushers in playing time. The Eagles will seemingly lean into him more often following Brandon Graham’s injury.
- Reed Blankenship left the game early due to a concussion.
- 51 snaps was a season-high for Josh Sweat. The Eagles have been intentional about not overworking him past a certain point within a given game.
- Milton Williams played a season-high 41 snaps as DT2. He benefited from Carter getting extra attention.
- Jalyx Hunt was a bigger part of the edge rush rotation with Graham and Bryce Huff on injured reserve. The rookie has gone from a potential redshirt year to being the No. 3 edge rusher.
- Jordan Davis played his third-lowest snap count percentage. He was visibly impactful in limited playing time.
- Tristin McCollum came in to replace Blankenship at safety.
- Avonte Maddox was only on the field for two defensive snaps. The Ravens went right after him. The Eagles can’t keep playing Maddox.
- Oren Burks came in for a snap after Nakobe Dean briefly left the game with an injury issue. Notable that it was him and not Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
SPECIAL TEAMS
- Rick Lovato got called for a holding penalty that made the Eagles re-kick a punt.
- Ochaun Mathis exclusively played on special teams in his Eagles debut. He was credited with one tackle.
- Eli Ricks was active for the first time since Week 9. He’s played zero defensive snaps and 26 special teams snaps in four games this season. If he can’t play ahead of Maddox and he’s not really helping out on special teams, why’s he even on the roster?
DID NOT PLAY
INACTIVE: DeVonta Smith, Johnny Wilson, Darius Slay, Nick Gates, Darian Kinnard, Trevon Keegan, Tanner McKee
ACTIVE: Kenny Pickett, Ainias Smith, Charles Harris
- DeVonta was reportedly pushing to play in this game. He might be able to suit up in Week 14, though the Eagles shouldn’t need him in order to beat the Carolina Panthers.
- Wilson is dealing with a hamstring injury. It’s unclear if he’ll be able to play in Week 14.
- Slay might be cleared to return in time for the Eagles’ Week 14 game.
- Keegan is five games away from being a healthy scratch all season long. Ditto for McKee, who still dresses for game action as the emergency third quarterback.
- Unusual to have three active players who don’t log a snap. Pickett is no surprise as the backup QB. Ainias not playing after the Eagles tried to give him some designed players seems like a bad sign for his stock. He was WR5 behind Brown, Dotson, Campbell, and Covey. Harris was seemingly active just in case there was another edge rusher injury. With Harris only joining the roster last week, he’s still catching on to a new defensive system. One would think he’ll be incorporated into the Eagles’ pass rush rotation as soon as Week 14. Revenge game against his previous team?!
