The high of the Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl win is finally starting to come down from cloud nine. Things are officially in offseason mode and the team will need to be vigilant. The birds have some key free agents on the market and are bound to lose at least a few. With that being said here are some key positions of need the Eagles must look into in order to keep the roster competitive.
The 3 Biggest Eagles Positions of Need
Defensive Line
This is probably the most pivotal position to address going into the offseason. The team is slated to have two major free agents in Josh Sweat and Milton Williams. Both were solid rotational pieces on the defensive line through the regular season. They also had standout performances in the Super Bowl to help the team take home its second championship over the Kansas City Chiefs. Due to this, both will probably command significant money this offseason. Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman will probably invest in the position in free agency. However, he can’t be guaranteed to keep both this offseason.
This is probably something the team is prepared for. The defensive line is a position that Roseman has a history of prioritizing in the draft. The team takes a a lot of pride in building through the trenches so one can be almost certain that Roseman will invest at least one draft pick in the position. Some realistic options are Nic Scourton out of Texas A&M, Jack Sawyer from Ohio State, and Kenneth Grant out of Michigan.
Offensive Line
This is another area in terms of positions of need where Roseman may be looking for upgrades and replacements. In particular, Mekhi Becton is the key free agent the team could lose. Becton was a reclamation project from the Jets and turned into a successful starting guard for the team throughout the season.
Additionally, the team has previously worked on finding eventual replacements for veteran talent. The most recent examples were drafting Landon Dickerson and Cam Jurgens as future replacement options for future Hall of Famer Jason Kelce. The Eagles may turn to this strategy again for another veteran. While Right Tackle Lane Johnson is still playing at a high level, he’s getting up there in age. The team should start thinking about life after Johnson and plan for their tackle of the future.
Some options here could be Tyler Booker out of Alabama, Donovan Jackson out of Ohio State, and Josh Conerly Jr.
Linebacker
First and foremost, The team should invest in Zack Baun this offseason. Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio turned him into an all pro and keeping someone with that connection is pivotal. The team could also look into adding depth at the position. This is a position group Roseman typically looks to the middle rounds for.
Some options in this regard are Barrett Carter out of Clemson, Smael Mondon Jr. out of Georgia, and Chris Paul Jr. out of Ole Miss.
