The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl 59 Champions. They defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in the big game to capture their second Lombardi in franchise history. The celebration is on for the new champs, but once the confetti and champagne wear off, they must address a big loss to the team. Eagles Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore has left the team to become the next Head Coach of the New Orleans Saints. This news became official after weeks of speculation and interviews.
Eagles Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore Departs for the Saints
Moore’s Impact On the Eagles
The Eagles Offensive Coordinator was a breath of fresh air to the team after a disastrous end to the 2023 season. The entire team imploded after a blowout loss to the San Fransisco 49ers. The team won only one of its final seven games after that and the offense became incredibly one-dimensional and predictable.
Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman knew there needed to be change after such a collapse, and brought in Moore and Vic Fangio to replace previous coordinators Brian Johnson and Sean Desai. The Eagles were once again a top-ten total offense in the league. Moore took the team back to its roots being a run-first offense. Overall, the Eagles had the second-best rushing offense in the league, but the league’s leading rusher in Saquon Barkley. They also had the league’s best offensive line.
Also, after a slow start, Moore identified when to take pressure off of quarterback Jalen Hurts to throw for a high volume, it solved his turnover problems. Also, Moore was better at implementing pre-snap motion in the offense which helped them be less predictable and one-dimensional.
Overall, Moore took the roster that was provided to him and made the most of it, now that he’s gone, how do the Birds respond?
Eagles Offensive Coordinator Options
According to NBC Sports Philadelphia, similar to 2023, the Eagles could look to hire from within. The current top internal candidate is passing game coordinator and associate head coach Kevin Patullo. This would seem like a sensible option considering he would probably be more familiar with the Eagles’ current system than any other potential candidate.
The team isn’t looking for a reset of their current system which is dominated, they just need someone to continue what works with somewhat of their creative spin like Moore accomplished. The hesitancy in this would be the last time they tried this with Johnson, it ended catastrophically. Fortunately, the difference is Barkley isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. No matter the gameplan it will be hard to stop Barkley which will continue to simplify the game for Hurts.
Other outside candidates include Marcus Brady, Jim Caldwell as a veteran option next to Fangio, and perhaps even a few reunions in former Offensive Coordinator Frank Reich, or perhaps… even Doug Pederson.
All options at the moment are interesting however this will certainly be a big story to follow this offseason. Getting someone with stability and experience will be key to not having a repeat of the 2023 season and staying in contention as the defending champs next year.
