The Birds totally KICKED THE CRAP out of the Kansas City Chiefs! Who thought preventing a threepeat was going to be that easy?!

Final score: 40 to 22.

Vic Fangio’s defense was AWESOME. They totally shut down Patrick Mahomes, who easily had one of the worst games of his entire career!

Jalen Hurts continues to be a big game player! His final stat line: 17/22, 221 yards (10.0 average), 2 TD, 1 INT, 119.7 passer rating … 11 runs, 72 yards, 1 TD.

FIRST QUARTER

• The Chiefs won the coin toss and elected to defer. Birds’ ball first. The Eagles began at their own 30-yard line. The first play was a Saquon Barkley carry (what else?) for four yards. Jalen Hurts’ first pass of the game was a completion to DeVonta Smith on a comeback for a first down. Facing 3rd-and-11 after Barkley was tackled for a loss on a short catch, Hurts ran for nine yards. Facing 4th-and-2 Nick Sirianni correctly kept the offense on the field … and Hurts dropped a pass in the bucket to A.J. Brown! But there was a flag for the weakest offensive pass interference flag of all time. Lol, ref show already?! The Eagles then punted from 4th-and-12 at the 50-yard line.

• The Chiefs took over at their own 12-yard line. Patrick Mahomes’ first pass was quickly completed for a first down. Facing 3rd-and-9 after Travis Kelce dropped a pass, Patrick Mahomes initially got away from pressure and got a throw off … that could’ve been picked off by Isaiah Rodgers but wasn’t caught. Good job by Vic Fangio’s defense to force the early four-and-out.
• The Eagles took over at their own 31-yard line after a good 13-yard punt return by Cooper DeJean. Hurts hit Dallas Goedert for a first down into plus territory. Facing 3rd-and-5, Hurts’ pass to Goedert was high but the Eagles actually got help from the officials this time with an unnecessary roughness penalty on the Chiefs for their defender striking Goedert in the head. Hurts aired it out against a blitz and Jahan Dotson (!!!) made the over-the-shoulder grab for a touchdown!!! Or not … because Dotson was down at the 1-yard line. Brotherly Shove for the first score of the game! EAGLES 7, CHIEFS 0.

• Kenny Gainwell made a nice special teams tackle to prevent an even longer kick return and the Chiefs took over at their own 33-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-3, Mahomes got pressured into a checkdown in the flat that sailed high.

• The Eagles took over at their own 20-yard line after a Chiefs punt bounced into the end zone. Johnny Wilson dropped what would’ve been a short completion. Facing 3rd-and-8 after a short Barkley run, Hurts hit DeVonta at the marker for a first down. Hurts hit Dotson (SECRET WEAPON?!) for another first down. Facing 3rd-and-4 after two Gainwell runs, a Chiefs blitz got to Hurts but KC was called for being offside for an Eagles first down. Charles Omenihu finally flagged after seemingly lining up over the line of scrimmage all game long. Hurts ran for a loss on a keeper to end the first quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

• Facing 3rd-and-10, the Chiefs sent a blitz and Hurts chucked it up only for his pass to fall short of A.J. Brown for an interception. Hurts’ first interception since the Eagles played the Dallas Cowboys on November 10.

• The Chiefs took over at their own 2-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-3, Mahomes’ pass for Kelce was low and not caught. Another three-and-out!

• The Eagles took over at their own 43-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-7, Hurts made a great throw to a contested A.J. Brown for a toe-tapping first down. Facing 3rd-and-5, a designed Hurts run only gained one yard. Facing 4th-and-3, Sirianni kept the offense on the field … only to try to draw the defense offside. After a timeout, Sirianni sent Jake Elliott out for a 43-yard field goal … which was made … but there was a flag. Originally, Jake Elliott and Nick Sirianni signaled it was on the Chiefs for jumping early. And that’s what the broadcast showed. But the Eagles were called for a false start. Elliott made the 48-yard field goal anyway but it should’ve been a first down. EAGLES 10, CHIEFS 0.

• Josh Sweat sacked Mahomes. Then Jalyx Hunt and Moro Ojomo sacked Mahomes. Facing 3rd-and-16, Mahomes fired off a pass … THAT GOT PICKED-SIX BY COOPER DEJEAN!!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! EAGLES 17, CHIEFS 0.

• Ojomo got to Isiah Pacheco for a TFL. Facing 3rd-and-9, Milton Williams got to Mahomes for another SACK. Punt. Amazing how this pass rush looks better on turf than a total slip and slide field?!

• The Eagles took over at their own 34-yard line. They picked up one first down and then got set back with Landon Dickerson called for holding. Justified flag. Then Hurts got sacked. But then Nick Bolton got called for hitting Barkley late to bail out the Eagles’ offense. Facing 3rd-and-3, Hurts’ pass to Brown against a blitz was short and incomplete. Facing 4th-and-3 from the plus 49-yard line, Sirianni sent out the punt team to take a delay of game penalty and then punt. Braden Mann’s punt bounced out of bounds.
• The Chiefs took over at their own 6-yard line with 1:49 on the clock. Zack Baun immediately made a diving interception to pick off Mahomes! What a player.

• The Eagles took over at the plus 14-yard line with 1:45 on the clock. Hurts hit a crossing Brown for a touchdown! Too easy! EAGLES 24, CHIEFS 0.

• The Chiefs took over at their own 30-yard line with 1:35 remaining and one timeout to work with. Jalen Carter drew a holding call on Trey Smith to knock the Chiefs back. Facing 3rd-and-11, DeAndre Hopkins was wiiide open but he dropped a first down conversion (not a great throw from Mahomes).

• The Eagles took over at their own 37-yard line with 0:25 left and two timeouts. They went with a Barkley draw that only gained two yards and the clock ran out. Would’ve liked them to either 1) actually take a shot or 2) just kneeled. Why expose Barkley to an extra hit there. But obviously just a nitpick to an otherwise pretty great half.

THIRD QUARTER

• The Chiefs took over at their own 30-yard line. They picked up their second first down of the game. Jordan Davis sacked Mahomes in a collapsing pocket. Then Sweat got to Mahomes again. Facing 3rd-and-17, Mahomes took off running for a short gain. More defensive domination!
• Facing 3rd-and-5, Hurts stepped up against pressure and took off running for 16 yards. Mahomes-like back breaking scramble there. A Barkley run took the Eagles into plus territory. Then Hurts hit Barkley, who bobbled the ball before catching it to put the Eagles into goal-to-go at the four-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-goal at the six-yard line after two unsuccessful Barkley runs, Hurts’ pass to DeVonta was incomplete. Sirianni sent Jake Elliott on the field for a 24-yard field goal to take a four-possession lead. But Rick Lovato was called for a snap infraction to knock the attempt back to 29 yards. Elliott made it again anyway. Not ideal to only come away with three points … but important to take 6:42 off the clock on that drive. EAGLES 27, CHIEFS 0.
• The Chiefs picked up a first down but then Brandon Graham drew a holding penalty to knock the Chiefs back. Facing 3rd-and-12, Mahomes hit Kelce to set up a shorter fourth down. Facing 4th-and-5, AVONTE MADDOX came up a huge pass breakup! AVONTE MADDOX!?!

• The Eagles took over at the plus 46-yard line and Hurts uncorked one deep to DeVonta for a TOUCHDOWN!!! WOWWWWWW. EAGLES 34, CHIEFS 0.

• Mahomes took a deep shot to Xavier Worthy for 50 yards. Facing 3rd-and-6, a scrambling Mahomes flicked a pass to Kelce for a first down. Then a scrambling Mahomes hit Worthy for a touchdown. No shutout. The Chiefs went for two but didn’t get it. KC only needed 2:06 to score. EAGLES 34, CHIEFS 6.

• The Eagles took over at their own 30-yard line. A Barkley carry ended the third quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER

• The Eagles slowly but surely drove into field goal range. Facing 3rd-and-13 after Hurts took a sack, the Eagles went with a draw for no gain. Elliott came in for the 48-yard field goal attempt … and drilled it. The Eagles took 5:43 off the clock. EAGLES 37, CHIEFS 6.

• The Chiefs took over at their own 30-yard line. Milton Williams strip-sacked Mahomes and then recovered the ball! Williams got called for unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for dunking over the goal post in celebration.

• The Eagles took over at the plus 33-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-5, Barkley ran for no gain. Elliott came in for a 45-yard field goal attempt, which he made … but there was a false start on Jordan Mailata. No matter: Elliott made the 50-yard field goal attempt! EAGLES 40, CHIEFS 6.

• C.J. Gardner-Johnson had a pick-six called back because it was a free play for the Chiefs with Carter jumping early. The Chiefs scored a garbage time touchdown on a 12-play, 75-yard drive that took 5:07 off the clock. They also converted a two-point try. EAGLES 40, CHIEFS 14.

• The Eagles brought Kenny Pickett in (resting the starters in the Super Bowl!) to hand the ball off in garbage time as Nick Sirianni got a Gatorade shower from DeVonta and A.J.! Pickett’s incompletion on fourth down created a turnover on downs.

• Another garbage time touchdown for the Chiefs, this one a 50-yard bomb from Mahomes to Worthy in the end zone against the Eagles’ backup defenders. EAGLES 40, CHIEFS 22.
• The Eagles recovered the Chiefs’ onside kick and ran victory formation to close her out!

• Mekhi Becton (knee) was evaluated in the medical tent earlyish in the second quarter. Tyler Steen entered at right guard. Becton was originally ruled questionable to return. Becton returned to the game later in the second quarter.
• Nolan Smith got banged up late in the second quarter.
• Cooper DeJean limped off in the third quarter. Avonte Maddox came in to replace him. DeJean returned to the game shortly after leaving.
