The New Orleans Saints are the last franchise with a head coaching vacancy. The franchise has been searching for their new head coach since the end of the regular season. However, reports indicate that Kellen Moore is expected to land the job as the Saints next head coach.
Kellen Moore Expected To Land Saints Head Coach Position
Kellen Moore has rapidly ascended the coaching ranks since transitioning from his playing career. After serving as the offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Chargers, he took on the same role with the Philadelphia Eagles. Moore saw great success with these teams. He led a dominant aerial attack in Dallas with the team consistently in the top five in passing yards. In Philadelphia, Moore has established an elite running back with Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts.
Moore is known for his innovative offensive schemes and ability to get the best out of quarterbacks. The New Orleans Saints have long been associated with high-powered offenses, especially during the Drew Brees and Sean Payton era. Moore’s offensive philosophy aligns with this tradition as he is a very creative playcaller. However, despite his offensive expertise, Moore would inherit a roster with significant challenges that could limit his effectiveness as head coach.
Quarterback situation
The most pressing issue on the New Orleans Saints roster is the uncertainty at quarterback. Veteran Derek Carr has been underwhelming since signing with New Orleans. His substantial salary has become a point of contention as it limits the Saints ability to improve the roster. Behind Carr the Saints have rookie Spencer Rattler. Rattler started seven games in 2024 and completed 57% of his passes for 1,317 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions. The team lost all six games he started, highlighting his struggles in adapting to the NFL as well as the Saints lackluster roster. Moore’s job is a lot more difficult as the Saints don’t currently have a long term solution at quarterback.
Rest of the roster
The rest of the New Orleans Saints roster is not in shape to contend right now. Kellen Moore will have his work cut out for him as the Saints next head coach due to the shortcomings on the roster. Running back Alvin Kamara and wide receiver Chris Olave are two bright spots on offense. However, with lackluster quarterback play these players aren’t able to thrive as much. Defensively, the team is aging with players such as Cameron Jordan and Tryan Mathieu.
How this might play out
If the Saints can establish a plan for their future at quarterback, Kellen Moore will likely be a great head coach. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has had the best years of his career when Moore was his offensive coordinator. In 2021, the Cowboys were second in passing yards per game with 282.4. Although the Eagles offense hasn’t been elite at throwing the ball, Moore has demonstrated his ability to adapt his philosophy and construct a dominant running game.
With the Eagles elite offensive line, dynamic running back Saquon Barkley, and the mobility if quarterback Jalen Hurts, this has been an elite rushing team. Philadelphia averaged 179.3 rushing yards per game in the 2024 regular season, the second most in the league. If New Orleans can build a competent roster for Moore, including a plan at quarterback, this could be a great pairing. However, if the Saints do not make changes to their roster, Kellen Moore will likely struggle as head coach.
