The Eagles Success In Building A Youthful, Lockdown Secondary Is A Plan That Is Being Copied.
If you thought that it wasn’t novel approach to lineup your draft picks in order to select the best young defensive backs in the country and then send them on a mission to beffudle some of the best wide receivers in the world — well — you are probably correct. It just so happens that the Eagles do it so much better than anyone else. But one thing is for sure — if it is planned inside the walls of the Novacare Complex — you can bet that it’s getting looked at by all other 31 NFL teams.
Last January— during the Eagles win at the Linc 55–23 over Washington — Philadelphia utilized a little history to help to run over the Commanders. Prior to the game, The Eagles were the only team in NFL history to start two rookie defensive backs in the Conference Championship Game. It’s also the first time in franchise history that the Eagles have two rookie defensive backs nominated for the prestigious Rookie of the Year — presented by the Associated Press.
That bore out this week when top NFL talent and Villanova graduate Christian Benford was extended by the Buffalo Bills for four years and $76 million. Selected in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft with the 185th pick — the CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year, twice First Team All-CAA, and FCS All-American (first team) is in Buffalo’s plan to be a lockdown starting cornerback of years to come.

We’ll soon find out if the success of DeJean and Mitchell is as coveted as we think that it is when NFL teams execute their own strategies in just under three weeks at the 2025 NFL Draft. It’s more than possible that before the 2025 NFL Draft is over — the Eagles may have another future Pro Bowl, All-Pro for its secondary.
On his way to the Novacare Complex, that is.
