Jalen Hurts Is In Good Company in the Record Books. In 2024, He’ll Look to Surpass Them.
During the 1960’s- Eagles quarterback Sonny Jurgensen stopped giving many interviews. It wasn’t because of a gag order, because he disliked the media, or because he was annoyed at a previous news article. It was because he was tired of returning to the team bus only to find that all of the beer was gone.
It’s often forgotten that when the Eagles won the NFL Championship in 1960 at Franklin Field — much like in 2018 — they had two All-Pro quarterbacks. Norm Van Brocklin (The Dutchman) had been a veteran with the Los Angeles Rams before coming to the Eagles. His backup, Sonny Jurgensen would take over in 1961 and throw 32 touchdown passes and for 3,723 yards. In perhaps one of the worst trades in Eagles history, the team traded Jurgensen to the Washington Redskins for Norm Snead and Claude Crabb in April of 1964.
Unlike when the Eagles won the Super Bowl in 2018 — however — the Eagles did not have a quarterback controversy in 1961. Van Brocklin, having won the NFL Championship would retire and the Eagles would immediately go with Jurgensen. In 2018 — both Nick Foles and Carson Wentz would return to the Eagles.
Thanks largely to the patented, trademarked, Tush Push/Brotherly Shove, Jalen Hurts now is second in Eagles history in rushing touchdowns with 46. He is second only to the legendary Steve Van Buren. He is now also catching Sonny Jurgensen with passing touchdowns as well. Needing only three more for Jalen to pass Jurgensen’s record with the Eagles set between 1957–1963.
What record that Hurts doesn’t have that Wentz, Foles, Van Brocklin, and Jurgesen have that Hurts does not as yet — a championship with the Eagles.
