The Eagles have a decision to make regarding Darius Slay, who could be a future Hall of Fame cornerback who has started to ponder retirement.
Slay just wrapped up his 12th NFL season at age 34, and he’s been focused on mentoring Quinyon Mitchell and the Eagles’ other young cornerbacks while looking toward the future. That future could include one final season and the potential for Slay to finish his career in another uniform.
The NFL is a business, and after winning a Super Bowl, the Eagles could move on from Slay with Mitchell, DeJean, Isaiah Rodgers, Kelee Ringo, and Eli Ricks among the next generation. Philadelphia pondered the move after the 2022 season, but the two sides agreed to a two-year, $42 million contract extension.
Slay has a $13,765,483 cap hit for 2025, and releasing the cornerback with a post-June one designation would save the Eagles $4,324,000 and carry a $9,441,483 dead cap hit, according to Over The Cap.
With Slay potentially headed elsewhere, we’re looking at five reasons Philadelphia should restructure his contract and allow him to finish his career with the Eagles.
