The team also made the signing of Lonnie Walker IV official.
Earlier this month, Roddy was brought to Philadelphia on a 10-day contract that expired following the 76ers’ abysmal loss to the visiting Boston Cetlics on Thursday night. Roddy actually made his Sixers debut in that contest, logging 13 minutes with four points, five rebounds and two assists. For what it’s worth, though, Roddy entered the game in the latter half of the third period when the contest was already realistically out of hand for Philly.
Roddy was originally selected by the Sixers 23rd overall out of Colorado State in 2021, but the team already had deal in place with the Memphis Grizzlies to acquire De’Anthony Melton. Roddy has been on the NBA merry-go-round ever since. He was dealt to the Phoenix Suns after a season and a half in Memphis and the Suns traded him to the Atlanta Hawks this past summer before joining the Sixers in February.
And, frankly, he’s been in the whirlwind for a reason. His numbers in the league haven’t been impactful enough yet to stick himself to one place in the NBA just yet. Roddy has gotten some good experience, however, playing in 163 NBA games across his time with the Grizzlies, Suns and Hawks. In his three-year career, he has averaged 6.2 points on 42.1% field goal shooting and 30.5% three-point shooting with 2.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game. He is on the shorter end at just 6-foot-4, but is a tank at 255 pounds and is only 23 years old.
Yes, I can already hear all the sarcastic jokes saying “oh good, the Sixers’ season is saved” in response to this. No one genuinely thinks that’s the case here, but it is nice to see the Sixers give chances to younger guys with potential rather than continuing their pattern of signing as many league vets over the age of 30 as possible.
