For the past few weeks, there have been rumblings about Paul George teaming up with Joel Embiid on the Philadelphia 76ers. Moments ago, Shams Charania of The Athletic had a significant update on that potential pairing.
Charania is reporting that Philadelphia’s interest in George has “waned” in recent days. As a result, the 76ers are not expected to pursue the All-Star forward in free agency.
“The Philadelphia 76ers’ interest in pursuing Paul George has significantly waned in recent days, and the franchise is expected to be aggressive elsewhere with its salary cap flexibility and draft capital leading into next week’s NBA Draft,” Charania said.
We can’t imagine 76ers fans will be happy about this update. On paper, George seems like the missing piece to Philadelphia’s championship puzzle.
George averaged 22.6 points per game this past season on 41.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc. Not only is he a lethal shooter, he’s a willing defender who can guard multiple positions.
Now that we can cross George off Philadelphia’s wish list, it’ll be interesting to see which teams pursue him this summer. He could make sense for teams like the Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat.
As for the 76ers, this could open the door for them to pursue a younger playmaker like OG Anunoby.
