Joel Embiid announced on his Instagram early Friday morning that he’s officially signed his extension with the Sixers.
Joel Embiid is staying put in Philadelphia for the foreseeable future. Embiid and the Sixers have agreed upon a $193 million dollar extension over three years on top of his current deal. Embiid shared the news Friday morning on Instagram. The team made it official shortly after.
This three-year extension will add on to Embiid’s current contract with two years left. Below is the breakdown, year-by-year:
2024-25: $51.4M
2025-26: $55.2M
2026-27: $59.5M
2027-28: $64.3M
2028-29: $69.1M (player option)
Talk about some big numbers. Sheesh.
This move was always a no-brainer for the Sixers, as Embiid has been loyal and patient throughout several front office regimes and team changes. He’s coming off a career year, averaging 34.7 points and 11 rebounds per game. Now at age 30, this contract will pay him into his mid-30s.
Embiid still needs to accomplish some things to solidify his legacy, but his story will go down as one of the most fascinating in league history regardless. Just under a decade ago people were wondering if he’d play at all in the NBA. Now, this deal will ink him $515 million in career earnings — the fourth highest in NBA history.
Embiid put out a statement via Instagram, reflecting on his new deal: “Philadelphia is home. I want to be here for the rest of my career. I love this community and everything you’ve given me and my family. There is a lot more work to do. You guys deserve a championship and I think we’re just getting started.”
This extension officially matches up Embiid’s contract with Tyrese Maxey’s newly signed deal. The Sixers have over $715 million committed to Embiid, Maxey and Paul George alone.
Congrats to Joel Embiid on yet another life-changing contract. It’s well deserved, given the patience and injury problems he’s had to work through throughout the past few years. Now, Embiid has a chance to accomplish a rarity — staying with one franchise for his entire career.
