Dikembe Mutombo passed away today at the age of 58 from brain cancer. Mutombo first revealed in 2022 that he was undergoing treatment after the discovery of a brain tumor.
Mutombo was the fourth overall pick in the 1991 NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets after a successful career at Georgetown.
Mutombo was an eight-time NBA All-Star and four-time Defensive Player of the Year. Mutombo was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015. Mutombo played for the Nuggets, Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks and Houston Rockets.
Mutombo helped lead the Nuggets to a first round upset of the No. 1 seed Seattle SuperSonics during the 1994 playoffs. Mutombo also anchored the defense for the Allen Iverson-led Sixers that reached The Finals in 2001.
