NBA Hall of Famer Allen Iverson was notorious for being dominant in spite of his smaller frame. But the Philadelphia 76ers’ statue dedication to him revealed a laughably – and, to some, insultingly – small monument.
However, Josh Reynolds of SB Nation pointed out that the situation isn’t as serious as some make it out to be. Taking to X, Reynolds noted that the statue was meant for their walk of fame outside the practice facility and that it’s roughly the same size as the ones that are already there.
“For everyone crushing the Sixers & the Iverson statue not familiar with the situation: The Sixers don’t own the arena they play in, which is why they built their walk of fame outside their practice facility where all the statues are the same size,” Reynolds wrote.
Many argued that even if the statue isn’t that much smaller than the other ones there, it still makes him LOOK small, which they feel is just as bad:
“Ok, I guess this makes sense. But man, it still looks really bad,” one user wrote.
“The statues aren’t the same size. Look at the base of all of the other statues and then look at Iverson’s statue. It’s significantly smaller,” another argued.
“Ok this does make me feel better I didn’t realize this,” wrote a third.
So it seems like the complains were much ado about nothing. The 76ers were never going to be the team that intentionally disrespected one of the greatest players in their history.
